Popoca earns Troy scholarship
TROY, Ala. — Efren Popoca of Tifton was the recipient of a Troy University Foundation Scholarship during the 2020-21 academic year.
Popoca was awarded the Carolyn Flowers Brantley Endowed Scholarship.
Massey graduates from Troy
TROY, Ala. — Gregory Massey of Tifton graduated from Troy University during Term 3 of the 2020-21 academic year.
Massey graduated with the bachelor of science in business administration degree while attending Troy Online.
Term 3 includes students at Troy’s campuses in Dothan, Phenix City and Montgomery, Ala., along with teaching sites outside of Alabama and online.
Georgia Southern names president’s list
STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University recently recognized approximately 2,420 students for excellence in academics on the fall president’s list. To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must have at least a 4.0 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.
Area students include:
Tifton: James Daniel, Amanda Haskins.
Georgia Southern names dean’s list
STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University recently recognized approximately 3,850 students for excellence in academics on the fall dean’s list. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.
Area students include:
Tifton: Annslee Bassett, Jaylen Bryant, Heather Childers, Hannah Dum, Anna Hilliard, Leanne Keys, Sydney Smith, Alicia Weathersby, Nealee Weldon.
SRTC recognizes top students, instructor
TIFTON – Southern Regional Technical College honored its finalists and respective institutional winners of the 2021 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership, the Adult Education Student of the Year and the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Education at the Southwest Georgia Bank Conference Center in Moultrie.
The three awards represent excellence in their respective areas of technical and adult education. The GOAL winner was practical nursing student Noemi Reyes. The adult education student of the year was Brenda Morales. The Rick Perkins Award winner was welding and joining faculty Cliff Taylor.
“The annual awards luncheon is an opportunity for us to celebrate our college’s ‘Best of the Best.’ We are so proud of these students and faculty for their academic and teaching endeavors as well as their contributions to the college and community. They truly represent what makes our college remarkable,” said Jim Glass, president of SRTC.
The Adult Ed program recognizes and honors students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in adult education classes, college officials said in a statement.
Selection criteria include student character, attitude, attendance, leadership, and community involvement and activities.
The 2021 Adult Education Student of the Year is Brenda Morales of Tifton.
”Brenda is an exceptional young lady and student,” said Judy Abell, Morales’ nominating instructor. “Many of the students looked up to Brenda. Brenda was a great asset and example to the class. She also acquired her United States citizenship during this time. She was faithful and persevered through the difficult times of COVID and 2020.”
Shannan Walker, adult education curriculum coordinator, said that as Student of the Year, Morales will be the ambassador of SRTC’s adult education program.
She will attend partner meetings and events to share her story, and to promote literacy and adult education. Morales is continuing to pursue her goals by enrolling in classes at SRTC Tifton.
Summer semester begins May 13.
