Tift reports 6 deaths, 60-plus virus cases

TIFTON – Tift County reported six virus-related deaths and more than 60 new COVID-19 cases during the past week, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Tift County had reported 83 deaths by early in the week – all since the start of the pandemic, according to the GDPH. The county records 13 probable COVID-19-related deaths.

Tift County has reported more than 3,215 cases since the pandemic began last year, according to the GDPH, and more than 1,100 antigen cases; antigen cases are results from rapid virus tests.

The county has reported nearly 380 Tift residents have been hospitalized because of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, according to the GDPH.

Statewide, Georgia has reported more than 718,000 confirmed cases and about 148,000 antigen cases since the start of the pandemic. The state reports antigen cases — results from rapid virus tests — as part of its daily status report.

The state has reported more than 11,800 deaths. The GDPH suspects there have also been more than 1,450 probable deaths related to the virus.

More than 48,000 people have been hospitalized across the state due to COVID-19, according to the report, with more than 8,200 admitted to an ICU. 

More than 6.2 million COVID-19 tests have been performed with an 11.1% positive rate, health officials reported.

The state has performed more than 435,000 antibody tests — which show signs of past infection — with the state reporting a 13.1% positivity rate.
