Lady Devils win area wrestling, four place 1st

TIFTON — Tift County’s Lady Devils were the big winners at the Area 2 girls traditional wrestling tournament, held Feb. 2 at Tifton’s Eighth Street Middle School.

The Lady Devils had four first place finishers in the tournament, which featured teams from all over Georgia. In addition, Tift had one runner-up, two place third and one fourth.

Coach Zac Martin said the whole roster moves on to sectionals, which will be Feb. 9.

Tift scored 150 points to lead the 28-team field. Next closest was Ware County at 129.5. Rounding out the top five were Northside of Warner Robins (109), Warner Robins (104) and Houston County (101).

Zaniya Knight won at 110 pounds, one of the largest fields for any division. Knight won all three of her matches by pinfall, according to stats input on Track Wrestling, the final in 1:09. Sadie Davis had to pins en route to 115-pound title, spending a grand total of 1:36 on the mat in the two matches.

Addison Braswell won at 125 pounds. Like Knight, she defeated three opponents by pin. Samantha Vicars won at 235, needing 41 seconds to pin an opponent from Washington County.

Second place was Debraysia Doward at 190 pounds. Doward won her first match by pin before falling in the championship.

Placing third were Angel Dixon at 100 pounds and Skye Perry at 130. Nathaly Rivera was fourth at 135 pounds.

Tift’s eight wrestlers were the third most among all schools competing at district. Houston had 11 and Ware brought 10.

With girls wrestling still being a new sport, schools of all sizes are included in district. Among those present were Cook, Lowndes, Valdosta, Coffee, Jeff Davis and Turner County.
