Blue Devils better Bleckley in tennis action

TIFTON — Tift County tennis split with Bleckley County and dropped two to Colquitt County this week.

The Blue Devils defeated the visiting Royals from Cochran Wednesday, 5-0.

Singles wins went to Calvin Chee (6-1, 6-0), Jacob Smith (6-4, 7-5) and Mason Layfield (6-3, 6-4). Doubles wins were by Mason Lewis and Lee Hancock (6-0, 6-3) and Samuel Lawson and Brandon Thompson (6-4, 6-6 (4-7), 10-5).

The Lady Devils were less fortunate against the powerhouse Bleckley team, which won 5-0.

Macy Weldon dropped her match by 6-1, 6-1 scores. Kerrigan Turner lost, 6-0, 6-1. Laura Turner also fell, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles Katie Kemeness and Anna Bowen teamed, dropped their match, 6-3, 6-2. Taylor Walker and Liz Fallin combined, falling by 6-1, 6-0.

Against Colquitt County Tuesday, the Packers won four of five boys matches and all five girls matches.

Weldon lost, 6-0, 6-3. Kerrigan Turner dropped, 6-0, 6-0. Laura Turner lost, 6-4, 6-0. Kemeness and Bowen fell, 6-3, 6-1. Fallin and Walker lost their match, 7-6, 6-1.

Chee had the only win for the Blue Devils, taking his match, 6-1, 6-2.

Smith won his first set, 6-1, but dropped the next two, 6-4 and 6-4. Layfield also won his first set, 6-4, but fell in the next two, 6-2, 6-1.

Hancock and Lewis took the middle set, 7-5, but Colquitt won the other two, 6-4, 6-2. Lawson and Thompson dropped straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Tift battled Lowndes Thursday in region matches.
