MOULTRIE, Ga. — Flint River Habitat for Humanity celebrated a Moultrie woman becoming a homeowner Thursday.

The Albany-based house-building charity dedicated the home at 901 Seventh St. N.W. for Sahra Long. She and her children and close friends had completed 300 sweat equity hours helping in the Flint River Habitat ReStore.

Long purchased the Habitat home with a no-interest loan and her monthly mortgage payments will be used to build and rehab more Habitat homes, so that other qualified families can become homeowners just like her.

Flint River Habitat builds and rehabs decent and affordable homes for those who qualify, according to a press release from the charity. The homes are sold at a low cost and with a no-interest loan.

“The mortgage payments go into a revolving account to help fund future builds and rehabs, so that we have the ability to help more families,” the press release said. “We also rely on funds made in our ReStore. All of the money that is made in the ReStore, from donations, helps us build and rehab homes in the future.”

The press release noted that Habitat for Humanity also depends on the support of individuals and businesses — including the donor of Long’s new home, Gwen Ellis.

It also has both a home ownership program and a home repair program for veterans, and it’s always seeking qualified applicants.
