Johnson earns postseason basketball honor

TIFTON — Marquavius Johnson picked up a postseason honor and several area basketball players were recently named All-State by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Johnson was named honorable mention in Class AAAAAAA after posting 557 points and an 18.6 per game average. His total included a career high 29 points at Brunswick in November 2018. In 30 games, he scored 20 or more points 13 times. Tift advanced to the state semifinals this year.

Johnson earned another merit during March. He was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-Star team.
Irwin County’s Javon Stanley was named first team All-State in Class A’s public school division. Irwin was a semifinalist in 2019, its best basketball season since finishing as state runners-up in 1955.
Mya Byrd was named second team All-State for Turner County’s Lady Rebels. Yakia Temple picked up an honorable mention merit. Turner advanced to the sweet 16 in Class A.
In Class AA, Trinity Jones made second team All-State. She plays for Fitzgerald, which won its first 27 games of the 2018-19 season. The Lady Purple Hurricane fell in the quarterfinals to Douglass, which went on to win the state championship.
