TIFTON — A 14-year-old Tift County girl has been charged with killing her mother, police said Wednesday.

Around 8:02 a.m. Tuesday, Tifton police headed to the 100 block of East 18th Street to contact a woman about her daughter being in an accident in Bibb County, a statement from the Tifton Police Department said.

No one answered at the home, so officers reached out to the woman’s employer, who said she had not reported for work or notified anyone. The officers went back to East 18th Street and entered her home, finding her deceased in a bedroom from a gunshot wound, the statement said.

Investigation found that the woman’s 14-year-old daughter had taken her vehicle and gotten into a wreck in Bibb County, police said. The girl was later charged with one count of murder in her mother’s death, they said. She is being held in juvenile detention.

Tifton police asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to process the crime scene.
