MOULTRIE, Ga. — An autopsy performed on a young Valdosta man who collapsed on Monday at a Moultrie construction site and later died did not turn up an apparent cause of death.

William Dane Gilliland, 23, collapsed while working at a site on Rowland Drive between 8 and 8:30 a.m., Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said. He was pronounced dead at 9:06 a.m. at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

“He was working with a construction company out of Valdosta doing foundation work for some additional buildings at Colquitt EMC,” Brock said.

The autopsy showed a slightly enlarged heart, but that condition was not considered to be a life-threatening one, he said.

“It didn’t answer the question,” Brock said of the autopsy. “We’re waiting on the (toxicology) screening.”

Gilliland was otherwise healthy and worked out regularly, and a co-worker told officials that he never had issues with random drug screenings.
