CHULA — Temond Marcus of Tiftarea Academy took advantage of the early college football signing period Wednesday. The Panthers standout will be making his way north, to Hampton University in Virginia.
Marcus was one of 10 to sign early, according to Hampton’s website. He is the only Georgia player in the bunch. The Pirates currently list three Georgians on their roster.
Tiftarea head coach Erik Soliday said it was always great to see a player have an opportunity to play at the next level and get an education.
Soliday talked about how how hard Marcus has worked in the weight room, on the practice field and in the classroom.
Academics are already on Marcus’ mind. He said he plans on majoring either in computer science or engineering.
He said he chose Hampton because of its culture. Marcus said he felt at home on the campus.
Coaches loved Marcus’ energy, Soliday said. “That’s a special thing you have,” he said.
While in Chula, Marcus helped lead the football team to a district championship, and a Class 3A state semifinals appearance this season. Last year, the Panthers advanced to the elite eight.
Marcus made first team All-State this year in the GIAA, one season after he merited honorable mention. As a senior, the Panthers captain led the team with 94 total tackles, 70 of them solo stops. He tied for the team lead with nine tackles for losses.
Playing both sides of the ball, Marcus caught six passes for 219 yards. Two went touchdowns, including the game-winner over Terrell Academy.
“I’m glad you’re a Panther,” said Tiftarea athletic director Chance Benson. “You’ve made the school a better place.”
Marcus thanked “everyone who supported me in my journey.” He transferred to Tiftarea in high school, and further thanked Soliday and Benson for giving him a chance. “I thank you every day,” he said.
Hampton was a 5-7 team in 2024. They compete in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision in the Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference.
