QUITMAN — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is probing a Friday shooting in which a Quitman police officer reportedly shot at a fleeing suspect.
No one was killed in the incident, which took place in the 400 block of North Quincy Street, a statement from the GBI said.
Police were investigating an earlier incident in which someone shot at a car with people inside; officers spotted a vehicle involved in that shooting and tried to make a traffic stop, the statement said.
Instead of stopping, the suspect vehicle kept going for a short distance before a passenger jumped out and ran.
A police officer chased the suspect on foot through several yards, and the suspect dropped an item twice and stopped to retrieve it; he appeared to have hidden it in his waistband before he continued running, the GBI said.
Witnesses said the officer ordered the subject to stop and get down, but he did not, according to the statement. One officer shot at the subject several times, hitting him at least once, but he kept running and got away.
Officers found the subject 20 minutes later hiding in a shed and arrested him.
He was given medical care at the scene, then taken to a hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, the GBI said.
