Little Free Libraries up and running

TIFTON — The Tifton 20th Century Library Club (Tifton Woman’s Club) has found itself working on a project that brings back thoughts of its past. The club members are working on ‘Little Free Libraries’ to place around in the community for kids and adults to have easy access to reading material, according to a press release.

The 20th Century Library Club was the original founder of the Tifton Tift County Public Library over one hundred years ago, so for the club to find themselves in the little library business is exciting, the release states.

Shirene Daniell, Club President, said that the original Little Free Library (LFL) for the club was a really cute decorated “wooden box” on legs and placed under the porch at the apartments on Dixie Avenue. However, Daniell said that having these wooden boxes constructed was not cost effective for the club so other methods were investigated.

Lillie McIntire with the Tift County Council of Children and Youth (TCCCY) also thought this project was a great way to get reading materials to kids, the release states. In talking to Dan Sutton, advertising director of The Tifton Gazette, McIntire talked about the need and Sutton had the solution.  The Tifton Gazette had “vintage” metal newspaper boxes stored in the Gazette building. These boxes are water proof, sturdy and easy to use, the release states.  Sutton donated 16 boxes to the Woman’s Club to be used as LFL.

The club has two of the LFL complete and in place with books: Frazier Circle in Pebble Brook Subdivision and on Commerce Avenue by Redeemed Discount Store.

Additional boxes are nearing completion and will be placed at Tifton Community Gardens, the Tift County Council of Children and Youth office’s front porch, The Oaks Apartment on Oak Point Avenue and Affinity Clinic, according to the release.

The 20th Century Library Club is excited to be providing these LFL and will continue to place them around the community, the release states. If anyone would like to contribute to this project, please donate children and youth books to the office of TCCCY or email shirenedaniell@gmail.com for other delivery points.

The Tifton 20th Century Library Club meets the 2nd Tuesday at Leroy Rogers Senior Center at 2:45 pm. New members and guests are invited to attend.
