TIFTON – Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce welcomed Boyd Farms Fresh Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony downtown.
Boyd Farms Fresh is a sustainable farm-to-table business that sells high-quality beef from cattle pasture raised directly to the consumer, according to the chamber. It will deliver beef to a number of surrounding locations including Tifton with a set schedule soon.
The Boyds have farmed and operated the same land for seven generations since 1839. They grow corn, cotton, soybeans, sod, peanuts and raise cattle.
Allen Boyd, the current owner, is trying another approach in selling his product to the consumer.
“The pandemic was a real eye-opener for us,” Boyd said.
“With packing plants and harvesting facilities shutting down during COVID, we had a supply chain issue. I had been talking with other people, area cattle ranchers about how to shorten that supply chain, so that we can get our beef directly to the consumer and Boyd Farms Fresh was born.”
By having a truck that services several communities and a place to harvest the beef, it makes it easier to deliver the products to families throughout South Georgia through the coined term, MEATUps, he said.
MEATUPs will happen in Quitman, Thomasville, Valdosta, Tifton, Tallahassee, Fla., Monticello and Madison with an additional MEATUp once a month.
