TIFTON — The baseball home of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions was rededicated Saturday afternoon as the college announced some of its athletic goals for the future.
“We’re updating features,” said athletic director Alan Kramer.
On display Saturday was the new scoreboard, which has more detailed features, as well as a new pressbox and bleachers that were added earlier in the season.
Fans were invited to see a poster of what the school is planning on for its facilities.
Kramer said that “immediate plans are dugouts.”
These updates include the dugouts themselves and make the area at the baseball field bit more “fan friendly.” The new dugouts would include a bathroom for players and coaches on the home side. There will also be new bathrooms installed for fans, making those much closer than the ones at the Red Hill Tennis Center.
In the future, ABAC is looking at a new batting cage and backstops as well perhaps changing the current chain-link fence behind home plate for netting.
And though the scoreboard and bleachers are the most visible improvements this year, Kramer said there are other upgrades as well. New speakers will improve the sound quality and wireless internet is being installed.
The Stallions have been pushing towards a conference championship, as have all sports teams at the school. Tennis and golf are both already assured of competing at nationals.
“Everything is moving in the right direction,” he said.
Besides celebrating the field, alumni were in attendance for a cookout and former Stallion baseball players were also celebrated. The ex-players who came, Kramer said, represented many decades of ABAC hardball.
They gathered on the mound just before the game began and the most senior of the bunch, Chuck Scarborough, delivered the ceremonial first pitch before the current squad took on Georgia Highlands in a doubleheader.
