TIFTON — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be out to salvage the remainder of their series against South Georgia State Saturday after the first two did not go their way this week. ABAC and the Hawks meet in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Tifton.

South Georgia State won in Douglas Tuesday, 9-8. Thursday, the score was tipped in more in SGSC’s favor, 7-0. Four Stallions pitchers combined to strike out 11 — eight by starter Ty Davis — but the bats fell victim to a strong outing from Alex Muns and a fine defensive effort from the SGSC players behind him.

Davis worked a perfect 1st and 2nd, but one out into the 3rd, Christian Campbell reached on an error and the Hawks began to make the most of the miscue. ABAC kept everything on the infield for the remainder of the frame, but the Hawks scratched out three runs from it.

Adam Echols worked a walk, then he and Campbell pulled off a successful double steal to get both into scoring position. J.R. Lonon hit an infield single, scoring Campbell for the initial tally. Davis got a groundout to shortstop from Matthew Mebane, but it was a productive out for the visitors, making it 2-0.

Ian King drove in Lonon for the third run on yet another infield single before Davis closed out the inning with a strikeout.

Easton Willis broke up Muns’ potential no-hit bid with a one-out double to left in the 3rd, but no one could move him further along the basepaths. Slade Taylor earned a walk with two down, but a fly to center ended the threat without harm to SGSC.

The Hawks made their lead more comfortable over the middle innings, with one run each in the 4th and 6th and two more in the 5th.

Davis struck out the side in the 4th. However, a leadoff single by Logan Roberts became the fourth run because of Roberts’ legs. He stole second and immediately took third on an error. A pitch got away at the plate and Roberts scored standing.

The first four hitters of the 5th reached base safely for the Hawks. Echols, Lonon and Mebane hit consecutive singles to load up the bases. ABAC could not handle an infield chance off King’s bat, bringing in one run.

Davis got a strikeout for the first out, but that was the end of his night. Manager Matthew White brought in Thomas Livingston, who got an immediate grounder to Henry Daniels at first for the second out, which also brought in Lonon.

Beau Brand made a sliding stop at second base to steal a hit from Trent Ringer and the Stallions ended the inning down 6-0.

Hunter Goff and Campbell hit back-to-back doubles in the 6th for SGSC’s final run. Campbell was later called out at second for leaving the bag too early after tagging up on fly to deep right.

Greyson Freeman and Joshua Jenkins worked the last two innings in relief. Each struck out a man. the Hawks only had one hit over their last three innings, who Taylor promptly cut down on a steal attempt.

Meanwhile, Muns was rolling.

He allowed hits to Daniels and Willis in the 5th, but no Stallions ever saw third base. C.J. Rose singled in the 6th and, after Jack Witmer walked with one out in the 8th, Muns ended his night by starting a double play on a grounder back to the mound.

Presley Paulk gave up a hit to Rose and hit Daniels with a pitch in the 9th. Rose looked sure to score on a soft liner by Matthew Poblete, but the Hawks’ left fielder came out of nowhere to grab it, then double up a runner to end the contest.

Rose and Willis had two hits each for ABAC, which feel to 25-20.

After the Stallions wrap the SGSC series Saturday, they will have only two more home games remaining in the 2022 regular season: April 26 against Gordon State and April 30 against East Georgia.
