Editorial: Independent retailers backbone of community

Let’s take a moment during Independent Retailer Month and appreciate our independent retailers.

Local independent businesses are the backbone of our community.

They’re run and owned by our friends, family and neighbors.

When you spend money with them, you’re creating value within our community.

Some have been part of our community for decades.

Some have just joined us this year.

What they offer is as diverse as our community.

Some offer new clothes.

Some are a place to meet friends, to share a drink after a long day or over a ball game.

Some offer fresh, wholesome meals.

Others offer something sweet: muffins, cupcakes, donuts, cookies, danishes, etc.

Toys and comics.

Oil changes.

New tires.

A new car, or a used car that’s new to you.

That new pair of glasses you’ve been needing.

Dinner that you didn’t have to cook.

Breakfast on your way to work, or on a lazy weekend day.

Fresh produce, trucked in from the field.

Our lives, our community and our local economy are all richer for their existence.

With our support, they’ll continue to enrich our lives for years to come.
