Panthers to play in region consolation games

AMERICUS — Tiftarea Academy’s basketball teams will play Friday in the consolation games of the GISA Region 3-AAA tournament.

The Lady Panthers take on Valwood at 4 p.m., with the Panthers also playing Valwood in the following contest. The region tournament is being held at Georgia Southwestern State in Americus.

Tiftarea fell in their first round games at Georgia Southwestern Tuesday. The Lady Panthers dropped their contest to No. 1 Southland Academy Tuesday, 41-34. The boys, taking on Brookwood School, fell in an 84-46 final.

Southland and Brookwood School will clash in both the boys and girls championship games.

The state tournament begins next week, with teams and seeds determined by power rankings. As of Thursday, the Panthers are No. 14 in Class AAA and, if the standings hold, would be headed to St. Andrews (No. 3) in Savannah for the first round.

The Lady Panthers are No. 6 in Class AAA, according to MaxPreps. If they remain No. 6, they would host a first round game Tuesday. The current No. 11 in GISA AAA is Frederica Academy.
