Sylvester Phillips Jr.
STOCKBRIDGE — Sylvester Phillips Jr., 79, of Stockbridge, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at VA Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough. Dr. Tim Dowdy will officiate.
A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Cemetery in Vanceville with complete military honors. Wayne Driscoll will officiate.
The family will receive friends for 30 minutes prior to the memorial service Friday at the funeral Home.
Born Aug. 13, 1922, in Abba, Mr. Phillips was the son of Lilly Ivey and Sylvester Phillips Sr., both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Everhart Phillips.
Retired after 30 years of service, Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
After his retirement, he worked as a branch manager in road construction.
Mr. Phillips was a member of Eagles Landing Baptist Church, VFW of Jonesboro and the American Legion of Conyers.
He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, James D. Phillips of Stockbridge, William S. and Dottie Phillips of Mission Viejo, Calif., Sylvester O. and Beverly Phillips of Stacy, Minn., and Robert E. and Lisa Phillips of Stockbridge; two brothers, Gerald Phillips of Brookville and J. Tol Phillips of Tifton; two sisters, Evelyn Bartlett of Columbus and Marjorie Nolan of Decatur; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough is in charge of arrangements.
Floyd Y. Fletcher
IRWIN COUNTY — Floyd Y. Fletcher, 93, of Irwin County, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church in Irwin County. The Rev. Floyd Richards, the Rev. Jack Thompson, the Rev. James Faircloth and the Rev. Randall Gay will officiate. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery in Irwin County.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Paulk Funeral Home in Ocilla.
Born Dec. 17, 1908, in Irwin County, Mr. Fletcher was the son of Vianna Mann Fletcher and Joe Hancock Fletcher, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Wiley, Ben and Marion Fletcher.
A lifetime resident of Irwin County, Mr. Fletcher was a retired farmer and former employee of the Stockyard in Ocilla, Ashburn and Tifton. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Irwin County.
Mr. Fletcher is survived by his wife, Nealie Busbin Fletcher of Irwin County; one daughter, Melissa Jo Hightower of Ashburn; two grandchildren, Kippy Jo Lewis of Ashburn and Philip Wayne Hightower of Tifton; and two great-grandchildren, Lacey Jo Lewis and Olivia Lewis, both of Ashburn.
