The state Department of Transportation will close two rest areas on Interstate 85 in northeast Georgia on Aug. 25 as a cost-saving measure.

One, between the Ga. 20 and I-985 exits, serves westbound traffic in Gwinnett County. The other rest area being closed on I-85 is in Franklin County, serves traffic heading northeast toward Lake Hartwell.

DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope said Wednesday that the closing will not affect the welcome center rest area serving westbound traffic near Lavonia in Franklin County.

Pope says each rest area costs $107,000 a year to maintain.

The department plans to install concrete barriers to prevent motorists from stopping or parking at the rest areas.
