NASHVILLE — Berrien’s boys and girls tennis teams both advanced in the first round of the state Class AA tournament this week.

Though the boys were on the road, Berrien pulled out a 3-1 win over Dodge County.

They trailed by a match early on, but came back with a pair of doubles victories, one by Hamp Sirmans and Connor Fender (6-0, 6-0) and the other by Hayden Busque and Jaden Barnett (6-1, 6-0). Now ahead, all they needed was a 6-2, 6-0 singles victory by Fischer Hogan to advance.

Chason Warren earned a 7-5 first set victory before he was pulled.

Head coach Steven Roberts’ crew will travel to Bremen Monday for the second round.

Meanwhile, the Berrien girls swiftly moved past Lamar County in their first round matchup, 4-0, falling in only a single set.

Gracie Barfield had the initial win, 6-0, 6-0. She was soon followed by Kayla Wiley and Kailey Griffin in doubles, also 6-0, 6-0. Brooklyn Cersey clinched the victory, 6-0, 6-0, with Lexi Knight and Karla Wiley adding one more for good measure, 6-1, 6-0.

Carrie Osborne had already won her first set when play was stopped.

This is the 24th straight appearance for the Rebelettes in the sweet 16. They are now 19-2 on the year.

Jarrett Luke’s team will next play April 26 against Pepperell in Nashville. Matches begin at 1:30 p.m. at the courts behind Hardee’s.
