TIFTON — Where other Tift County students may have been taking their spring break to relax and unwind, the members of the county chapter of the Future Farmers of America were working hard to become ranked among the best in the state.

Members of the Tift County Schools Board of Education offered their congratulations to the students of the local chapter at their April 10 meeting, praising their excellent performance at state level FFA career development events that had taken place March 22, around the start of spring break.

Dana Spurlin, Tift County Schools chief information officer, lauded the efforts of the Junior Livestock Evaluation team and the Agricultural Communications team, who had both placed first in their respective competitions.

She explained that the Junior Livestock Evaluation team worked to develop the ability to select and market livestock to satisfy consumer demands and increase economic returns to producers, while the Agricultural Communications team were gaining experience in communicating the process of agriculture, having been tasked during the event with developing a communication plan, magazine layout, and social media plan for the FFA magazine “New Horizons.”

Additionally, the Agricultural Communications team will go on to compete in a national level competition, to be held in Indianapolis later this year.

Spurlin also offered congratulations to the advisors of both teams on behalf of the board, thanking them for their guidance over the stellar youths.
