TENNILLE — The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions came back Monday, April 11, and won the GCAA state golf championship. Playing at Twin Creek Golf Course, ABAC played 36 holes in a single day.

This was the fifth consecutive GCAA championship for ABAC.

“We were down by four strokes at the end of the first round,” said head coach Larry Byrnes. According to the scorecards from the tournament, the Stallions compiled a 310 in the first round, four strokes behind Georgia Military College’s 306.

Andrew College was third at 649, with Oxford College of Emory shooting at 685.

Hagen Marion had to bogey the last hole for ABAC to clinch the title, he said. Marion made the bogey, a recovery for him as an earlier drive on the hole hit the trees. “He made a clutch putt,” said Byrnes.

Brady Kotkiewicz, Ben Sanders and Marion all made all-tournament, with Byrnes earning Coach of the Year. The three finished individually 3-5.

Marion shot 77 in each round for a final of 154. Sanders was one behind him at 155, Kotkiewciz at 158. Brock Barber finished at 159. Barber and Sanders had ABAC’s lowest rounds at 75 apiece.

ABAC will next compete in the district championship in Bristol, Tenn. That tournament takes place April 24-26.
