Helen Bateman Bowen
TIFTON — Helen Bateman Bowen, 83, of Tifton, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakridge Cemetery. Dr. W. Ches Smith III and Dr. Wayne Roe will officiate.
The remains will rest at the home, 710 W. 20th St., where the family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Tifton.
Born Sept. 9, 1918, in Macon, Mrs. Bowen was the daughter of Clifford Harris Bateman and Margaret Louise Morris, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Calhoun Austin Bowen Sr.
Mrs. Bowen attended Shorter College and graduated from the University of Georgia. She was a former member of the Junior League of Macon, a charter member of the Tallassee Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, an honorary member of the Camellia Garden Club and a member of the Charlotte Carson Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. was also a member of the Elks Lodge and a former member of the Springhill Country Club.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dana B. and James E. Wintermeyer of Richmond, Va.; one son, Calhoun A. Bowen Jr. of Tifton; three granddaughters, Cherie A. Finch, Helen B. Wintermeyer and Virginia M. Wintermeyer; one grandson, J. Austin Bowen; one great-grandson, Matthew Finch; and two sisters, Mrs. Alvah H. Chapman of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Hugh M. Comer of Macon.
Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

James Alton Walker
TIFTON — James Alton Walker, 82, of Tifton, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. Eddie Hutchenson and the Rev. Jimmy Hinson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Walker, Jim Bynum, John Raiford Walker, Henry Lee Walker, Billy Stewart and Curtis Stafford.
The members of the congregation of First Assembly of God will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Walker to Hospice of Tiftarea.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Born June 21, 1920, in Cook County, Mr. Walker was the son of John Henry Walker and Susan Jeannette Weldon Walker, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one son, James Henry Walker, five brothers and four sisters.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Walker was retired from Tifton Aluminum and was a member of Tifton’s First Assembly of God and the American Legion Post 21 of Tifton.
He is survived by his wife, Bertice Butler Walker of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara W. and Clif Briggs of Lilburn; one sister, Blanche Bynum of Lenox; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Janice Whitley
ENIGMA — Janice Whitley, 49, of Enigma, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home. The Rev. Julian Strom, the Rev. Caryl Martinez and the Rev. Josh Hutchinson will officiate. Burial will follow at Flat Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Lovein Funeral Home in Nashville.
Born Feb. 17, 1953, in Cook County, Mrs. Whitley was the daughter of Robert Sumner of Nashville and the late Lucille Ray.
She was a homemaker and a member of Nashville Church of God.
Along with her father, Mrs. Whitley is survived by her husband, Jerry Whitley of Enigma; one daughter, Terri Wallace of Enigma; two sons, Donnie Green and Roger Green, both of Adel; five brothers, Bobby Sumner of Sparks, Donald Sumner of Nashville, Earl Wayne Sumner of Sparks, Randall Sumner of Nashville and Ray Sumner of Homerville; and six grandchildren, Dawson, Brentney, Josh, Ashley, Jessie and Lindsey.
