TIFTON — Tift County earned a split in tennis action earlier this week.

The Lady Devils defeated Irwin County on Monday and the Blue Devils won against Deerfield-Windsor Tuesday. Tift and Irwin were even at one win each before rains washed out the rest of their series, according to head coach Ivey Vickers. Deerfield-Windsor’s girls won over the Lady Devils.

Against Irwin Monday, the Lady Devils won four matches, with a fifth unable to be completed. Fatima Williams and Molly Wells had split sets at No. 2 singles, 3-6 and 6-3 and were leading in the tiebreaker before it was called.

Tift won straight sets against Irwin in the other four matches. Caydence Gabel won, 6-2, 6-4. Brayden Callison swept, 6-2, 6-1 and Anna Claire Owens had 6-3, 6-3 sets in her favor. Anna Lupo and Kylei Cutts won, 6-3, 6-2.

Ben Wilson won at No. 2 singles for the Devils against Irwin, 6-4, 6-2. Maitrey Patel, Ross Peters and the combo of Tyson Lasseter and Nathan Beck all saw their matches called.

A forfeit helped ensure the Blue Devils defeated Deerfield-Windsor’s Knights.

Peters won that match at No. 3 singles. Otherwise, the schools split matches.

Tift won both doubles, Christian Mathis and Rhett Stephenson defeating Boles Middleton and Davis Nicholson, 6-3, 6-3. Lasseter and Beck won over Harrison Smith and Davis Owens, 6-4, 5-7 (10-6).

Brook Margeson won against Wilson, 6-0. 6-2, and Ellis Holten defeating Patel, 6-1, 6-0 in singles.

Cutts and Lupo defeated Carlisle Cohen and Sarah Sternenberg, 6-0, 6-1, with Wells and Williams defeating Lilykate Castle and Ava Hollewell, 6-1, 7-5.

Deerfield won all three singles. Sophie Singleton won over Gabel, 6-1, 6-0. Bella Brum was a 6-1, 6-1 victor over Callison and Jia Patel triumphed over Owens, 6-0, 7-5.

Tift was to have traveled to Lee County Wednesday, but those matches were called off because of weather. They are scheduled to host Lowndes next Tuesday.
