Graham, Johnson among leaders as track heads to sectionals

TIFTON — Fresh off the Region 1 championships, Tift County’s track and field qualifiers are headed to Westlake in Atlanta Saturday for the sectional tournament.

Sectionals involves half the state — Regions 1, 2, 6 and 8. The top eight at Westlake qualify for state, which will be next week in Carrollton.

Jamari Johnson qualified for sectionals at 6-6, tied for best seed with Izear Wimbery of Carrollton. Johnson has cleared as much as 6-9 this season.

Though Johnson is the only Tift athlete to be top seed in any event, Nairobi Graham could have an even bigger afternoon

Graham’s time in the 300 hurdles is second fastest at 44.59 seconds. The person in front of her was also No. 1 at region, Mmekom Inyang of Richmond Hill, who ran in 44.06 seconds.

In addition, Graham’s time in the 400 (56.21) is third and, in the 200 (24.82 seconds), she is fifth best.

The boys 4×100 team’s time of 41.78 seconds is fifth best in this sectional.

Others qualifying for sectionals:

Russ Benton (800), Iliana Cleveland (800), Jordan Gaskins (110 and 300 hurdles), Marshall Howard (200), Jaxson Hughes (pole vault), Anthony Pace (pole vault), Zacarius Paulk (shot put) and Diamond Wallace (long jump), as well as the boys 4×400 and 4×800 and girls 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 crews.
